Psalm 51:1-3

Do you remember that quote from one of my old Pastirs years ago? “Sin will take you further than you wanted to go, cost you more than you wanted to pay, and keep you longer than you wanted to stay.” That is so true for David when it comes to Bathsheba. David was married to several women. Bathsheba was married to one man. If David would have gone to battle with his army, he never would have been home to see Bathsheba taking a bath on her rooftop.

When it comes to sin, one of my other old Pastors used to say, “We think, say, then act, then sin.” David saw her, thought about her, then told a servant to go get her. David wrote our verses after Nathan the prophet came and corrected him on the whole thing with Bathsheba. (He didn’t just sleep with her, he got her pregnant then had her husband killed in battle. You can read about it in 2nd Samuel chapter 11 for their story. Then Nathan's rebuke in chapter 12.)

David wanted mercy from God because he knew all of that was sin. If you notice, David understood that God’s mercy comes from His unfailing love and compassion. We may have done some terrible sins in our lives, but God is FULL of mercy and can and will forgive us if we ask. He is just THAT good!
