Proverbs 31:8-9
In this last chapter of Proverbs, we see it’s written by someone named King Lemuel. Some scholars think it could be Solomon using a nickname. Lemuel means “for God” and “devoted to God”. So, whoever it is, this writer had wisdom and was writing wise advice from his mom. If it is Solomon, that means his mom is Bathsheba. If you know her story, you know why she taught him so much about avoiding bad things & chasing wisdom.
Our verses today make me think of our modern issue of abortion. This topic is debated among Christians a lot. I think these verses are a prime example of the fact that God wants us to speak up. Of course, the poor are mentioned as well. “Those who can't speak for themselves” and “helpless” are the words that make me think of unborn babies in the womb.
I understand that some people think we shouldn’t care and that people should be allowed to do whatever they want. But those unborn babies can't speak for themselves. The people who use abortion has birth control shouldn't in my opinion, when almost all health departments offer free birth control pills & condoms. There are easy ways to prevent pregnancy. Adoption is also an option. Many couples can't have babies and giving a baby to someone could change their lives.
The homeless people in our towns need help as well. If I was rich, I would build tiny home communities and get them off the streets. Especially veterans. Child sex trafficking comes to my mind too when I think about these verses. Is there any particular thing you can think of when it comes to those who can't speak for themselves?
