Proverbs 3:11-12
To be honest, this is an area that I struggle with. I understand the concept. Especially as a parent, when my children were young, they got in trouble when they were disobedient. All throughout the Old Testament, we see the same thing between God and Israel.
We know that God is good and He can only do good. But He is also just. We forget that He is able to do things based on His justice. However, He DOES NOT cause bad things to happen to us.
Looking at God through Jesus, we see that Jesus never hurt anyone. He cursed a fig tree for not producing fruit and it died. Jesus called people out sometimes, which is sort of discipline. Then He told some to go and sin no more. (The Pharisees did not realize He was calling them out sometimes.)
We also have the Holy Spirit who helps us before we do something that causes pain. (Which they didn’t have for a while.) He will also move in us while we are doing something we know we shouldn't. That’s conviction and it’s one way we get disciplined aka corrected now. We can push past anything Holy Spirit tries to do, but that will result in us having to deal with our consequences later. What are your thoughts on God’s discipline?
