Philippians 2:3-4
Have you ever known anyone that was completely selfish? I think it takes a few things to create that in soneone. First of all, we are all born sinners because of what happened with Adam & Eve. I mean, you’ve seen a 2 or 3 year old lie, right? No one had to teach them how to do that.
Second, people are a product of their environment, however, it shapes people differently. Some only children are extremely selfish. I think it’s based on their childhood & a conscious decision on how they want to be treated. While some were not spoiled by their parents, they wished to be, so they became self centered. Others are just spoiled brats because their parents spoiled them. I’m the exception to these. My parents didn’t spoil me and I didn't think I deserved to be spoiled either, so I grew up not selfish.
The dictionary defines selfish as, “devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one’s own interests, benefits, welfare, etc regardless of others.” Selfish is the opposite of how God wants us to live.
If you read about Jesus's time here on earth, He was never selfish. Even when He was exhausted, He served. He prayed for people, healed people, and taught people no matter what. We think, “Yeah, but He’s God and I’m only human.” He was human too. He needed food, water, and sleep like everyone else. He was not selfish at all.
The longer we live for God, and get to know Him, the more we treat others correctly. As we have said all month, we need community. We need people in our lives to walk & serve with us. That can't happen if we are wrapped up in ourselves.
