Luke 12:22-24
I’m sorry for starting our verses with a “then”. To me, it can cause the verses to seem out of context. So, let’s put them there. Verses 13-21 are Jesus teaching the parable of the rich fool. He was the one who tore down his barns to build bigger ones. He wasn't interested in sharing and helping people in his community. (Being generous with our time, tithe, and talent is a big part of our faith.) Jesus told this parable to a man who asked Him to tell his brother to split their father's estate. (Back then, everything went to the oldest child.) He warned against greed.
Just above verse 22 in my Bible, it’s titled “Teaching About Money & Possessions”. Jesus just went from warning about greed to discussing not worrying (aka being anxious) about our food & clothes, essentially our basic needs. Do you see how these 2 things go together?
Greed can cause anxiety because you are feeling like you don’t have what you need and that puts you above God. It makes YOU your Provider. But that’s not how God wants it to be. HE is our Provider. Most people teach these verses on our fear of lack, which can be true. I just now saw this revelation while writing this morning.
God provides for the birds. Sometimes He uses us. (Where are my bird feeder people at?) The birds have purpose, but not like we do. If He provides for them, what makes us think we aren’t special enough that He wouldn’t provide for us? I want my needs met, but ultimately, I want what verse 21 says…. I want a RICH relationship with God!
