John 18:36

This verse falls in the section where Jesus was being questioned by Pilate at His “trial”. In verse 33, Pilate asks Jesus if He is the King of the Jews.

Pilate was the Roman Governor at the time. The Romans had overtaken Israel and were seriously oppressing them and taxing them a lot! Honestly, the disciples thought Jesus was going to over through the Roman Government and take over as their earthly King. I can see why they thought that based on some things out of the Old Testament, but that was never the plan. Jesus never once mentioned over throwing anyone. He taught them to obey the laws of the land. (Like paying taxes.)

Jesus’ Kingdom isn’t on earth. But His people are.
