Genesis 46:1-4
A lot has happened since yesterday's verses. Jacob is one of Isaac’s twin sons. He was actually born second, but took his brother's birth right and became the family line God used.
At this point of our verses, Jacob has 12 sons, one of which he thinks is dead, Joseph. A famine hits the land and 10 of his sons go to Egypt where they have heard there is stored up food because of the vision and wisdom of the second man in command. (Spoiler alert, that turned out to be their brother Joseph.) on the first trip to Egypt, the sons of Jacob went without him & his youngest son Benjamin. Jacob favored Joseph & Benjamin because they were Rachel’s sons and he loved her.
Jacob’s sons make a second trip with their youngest brother Benjamin and then Joseph reveals who he is. That’s when they go back and tell their dad that Joseph is the one providing food for them.
When God tells Jacob it is OK to go to Egypt, there are 66 direct descendants who went with him. This does NOT include his daughter's in laws. Joseph was married and had 2 sons of his own. Jacob was VERY wealthy as well and had a ton of live stock and all. I’m sure he was hesitant to move, which is why God spoke to him and told him it was OK to go.
As a small side note, this family of roughly 80 people grew to over a million by the time Moses came along to get them back out of Egypt 400 years later. How mind blowing is that?
