Genesis 37:23-25

Quick history lesson to give our verses the context they need. Abraham and Sarah had Isaac. Isaac had Jacob and Esau, twins with Rebekah. Jacob had 12 sons of which, at the time, Joseph was the next to youngest. He was favored because he & Benjamin were born to Jacob in his old age. Jacob gave Joseph the beautiful robe his brothers took off of him in our verses.

Besides being Jacob’s favorite, God had given Joseph some prophetic dreams showing him the future. Joseph was too young and not wise enough to keep them to himself, which fueled his older brother's jealousy that much more.

This event of Joseph being sold into slavery and going to Egypt with the Ishmaelite traders began an approximately 13 year time of suffering before he became 2nd in command in Egypt. A lot of different bad things happened to him but the ENTIRE time, the Bible tells us that God was with him and he was blessed. God gifted him so that he could interpret other people's dreams. That’s what landed him as 2nd in command in Egypt.

Sometimes suffering is no fault of our own. Others cause our pain either on purpose, or not on purpose. Either way, when God is with us, we end up ok after the suffering. If you’ve never read Joseph's whole story, I highly recommend it!
