Exodus 20:5-10
It’s a lot to write today! Sorry guys! Verse 5 is basically continuing verse 4 about not having idols. God doesn’t want us to put anything above Him in our hearts. I have heard different things about those little g gods, but I don't know enough to really go too deep on them.
Now, I want to say something else about verse 5. I believe with all my heart that God has done away with the sins of the parents falling upon their children. The new covenant handled that. When Jesus forgave people, He never said that. If you remember, the man Jesus healed of blindness and His disciples asked who sinned to make him blind, his parents or him… Jesus said neither. (John 9:1-3) Each of us is held accountable for our own sins, not the sins of our parents.
As far as misusing God’s name or saying it in vain, that too is a broad topic. We generally consider it cussing. But sometimes I think it's more. Anytime we claim God did something He didn't, or we put ourselves down, I think that’s misusing His name. Boy am I guilty of the putting myself down part!
The Sabbath is a BIG deal to God. The Israelites added it to though. God wants us to rest. It’s not healthy physically, mentally, or spiritually to go, go, go. Our body, soul, & spirit need down time each week.
