1st Kings 8:65-66

The occasion in our verses was a joyous one. Not only was it the Festival of Shelters, but Solomon had just finished the Temple and had placed the Ark of the Covenant in it. (If you remember, the Ark held the original stone tablets of the 10 Commandments.) So, this was a huge deal. The dedication of the Trmple happened just in time for them to celebrate the Festival of Shelters.

The Festival of Shelters was established way back in Leviticus Chapter 23. God gave Moses a list of Festivals to celebrate. The Festival of Shelters began immediately after the Day of Atonement on the 15th day of the appointed month. It was a 7 day Festival and no one was allowed to work during part of it because it was after their Harvest too.

God set them in place so they could assemble together, worship Him, and rest some. He also wanted them to celebrate with JOY before Him. (Leviticus 23:40) As they had done so for 14 days like our verses say, Solomon sent everyone home joyful and glad.
