Romans 13:8-10
Starting at verse 8 in my Bible, it's titled, “Love Fulfills God’s Requirements”. Remember, Paul is writing to the newly formed Roman church that he started. The Romans worshiped Caesar & a bunch of idols. They dudn’t grow up hearing the 10 Commandments like the Israelites did.
I really like Paul’s thoughts in verse 9. Basically if you love people like you should, you won’t commit adultery, murder, steak or covet someone else. Those things aren’t loving. Now, the other person might not ever know you are coveting aka jealous of them, but when you do that, you aren’t being loving. Resentment can take root and full on RUIN a friendship when that happens. I have experienced this personally.
God didn’t give us the 10 Commandments and this one of loving our neighbor to control us. He gave them to us so we could treat people right & live good lives.
I’d like to point out something major about verse 10. We are human. We will do wrong to others sometimes, but the point is to strive not to. If God IS LOVE and love does NO wrong to others- God can’t do “wrong” to us.
When I first lost my twins in 1996, I thought God MADE me lose them to come back to Him. I’d been out of church since I was 15 years old. The more I got to know Him & His character, I realized how wrong I was. What loving Father breaks His chuld’s heart, expecting her to come to Him? God didn't make my body miscarry. God can't give people cancer. He doesn’t make us get in wrecks. He does not do wrong to us. Period. If we are living for Him, we should do our best to treat people the same way!
