Luke 1:72-75
Our verse today picked up in the middle of John The Baptist’s dad’s prophecy. John’s birth was written about from verses 57 to 66. Then my Bible has the title, “Zechariah’s Prophecy”. Just in case you don’t remember, when the Angel Gabriel told Zechariah in the Temple that he and Elizabeth would have a baby, he questioned and didn’t believe. God touched his mouth and made him mute. It wasn’t until John was born that he was able to speak again.
Verse 67 say's Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and he began to prophecy. He praised God for sending the Savior from the line of David. He said, “Now we will be saved from our enemies and from all who hate us.” This saving & rescuing from the enemies probably made everyone think of Rome since they were the current oppressors of Israel.
God’s plan was not to over throw Rome and release Israel. Jesus came for the entire world to be saved, not just one country. So, I think this is about serving God without fear of Satan and anyone who tries to stop believers. Even now, in our modern world of 2026, Christians in other countries are persecuted. It’s amazing to me that persecution is still happening over 2,000 years later! We don’t have to fear because “What can mere mortals do to us?”
