John 8:34-36

Today's verses are just a few down from yesterday's. When Jesus said “set you free” yesterday, they replied that they were descendants of Abraham, therefore, they had never been slaves to anyone. What a big fat lie that was! They become slaves in Egypt pretty early on in the Bible. Many other times, they were captives of other counties. Then, of course, while Jesus was there, Rome was oppressing them terribly and taxing them.

Since they were talking literally, Jesus decided to talk spiritually and inform them that sin is slavery. One of my old Pastors used to say, “Sin will take you further than you wanted to go, cost you more than you wanted to pay, and keep you longer than you wanted to stay.” Isn’t that so true? As I’ve said before, we are all SINNERS until we meet Jesus. Giving our lives to Jesus makes us not sinners anymore.

God adopts us into His family, and that lets us become sons & daughters. Jesus said that makes a part of the family forever and He bring freedom. We still have our free will as well. So we can choose to sin if we want to. It doesn’t mean we lose our adoption, but it does put a gap between us and God. And it does get us out from under God’s protection. I don’t know about you, but I like being a daughter of God’s walking in freedom!
