Genesis 21:1-5
I’m sure this story is hard for some women. Infertility is a sensitive topic. (I think we write about it again later this month, just so you know.) Even in the culture of the Bible, having a baby was a huge thing for women. Sometimes we let our value, worth, and identity come from giving birth. We shouldn’t do that.
This story, while it is about resilience, we know that Sarah also got tired of the wait & convinced Abraham to have a child with a servant girl. That child, Ishmael, is considered a prophet of the Muslim religion and they trace Muhammad back to him. While he IS Abraham's son, he is NOT the promised son through Sarah. Moral of the story is, let God’s promises happen on His timing & don’t try to make it happen ourselves.
Abraham was told by God at 75 years old the He would make him a father of nations. (Genesis 17:4) We see that Isaac wasn’t born for 25 more years after that promise. In Genesis 18:10 three men visited Abraham & Sarah and they were told that next year when they visited, she would have a son. Of course, she did! (These 3 men represented God, Jesus & Holy Spirit.)
Waiting on anything relational is never easy. I have many single friends who long for a Godly husband. Some even still wish to have their own children. God is a Promise Keeper. If He had promised you, it will happen, it will. We have this one example to hold on to. Be resilient in the waiting and continue to live for the LORD. He has you!
