Exodus 2:1-4
For the next week or so we will be writing about Moses and then Joshua. Exodus chapter 1 is about the Israelites in Egypt. I was close to correct on Jacob’s (aka Israel) family having 70 people in it when they went to live in Egypt. There were 70, but that included Joseph, who was already there.
Eventually Jacob’s sons died and when a new Pharaoh came into office who didn’t know Joseph, he made Israel his slaves. Even though Israel was being severely mistreated, they multiplied in number. That made Pharaoh mad, so he issued an order to the Hebrew mid-wives to kill any baby boys born. The mid-wives feared God and did not obey his orders. Another order went out to throw baby boys in the Nile River. Such a horrible thing!
In our verses, Moses is born. He was hidden and protected. After 3 months his mom made a basket and let him float in the Nile. Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe and found the basket. This was just the beginning of God providing for Moses and Moses over-coming crazy situations. Pharaoh's daughter basically took him in and raised him in the palace with her son. Moses is so important to our faith. He was perfect, but he is definitely someone to learn about. Among his many accomplishments, he wrote down the first 5 books of the Bible.
