Matthew 2:9-11

Joseph and Mary, Jesus's parents, had to return to Judea because of Augustus, the Roman emperor decreeing for a census be taken. Joseph, being a descendant of King David, was required to go to Bethlehem.

Wise men from the eastern lands noticed a new star in the sky. They decided to go to where the star was and I guess God told them the Messiah had been born under the star.

King Herod called a meeting with them. That's where our verses started. Jesus's birth brought them so much joy that they traveled many miles to bring Him gifts. (Keep in mind, they were not even of Jesus's race.) Some scholars believe that Jesus was a toddler, not a newborn like our nativity sets show. If He was older, I’m not sure why they had not left Bethlehem.

These wise men were also joyful enough to give Jesus very expensive gifts. More than likely, God used them to provide for Jesus, Joseph, and Mary- because He knew they would have to flee to Egypt.

What a joy we have to read these historical accounts and love the Savior they are about!
